What is 5D cinema?
5D is not a dimension — it is a bundle: a 3D film, motion seating, and environmental effects synchronised to the picture. Here is what each layer adds and what to specify when you buy it.
Start with the honest answer: there is no fourth or fifth spatial dimension in a cinema. The labels 4D and 5D describe how many layers of physical sensation are synchronised with a 3D film. A 3D cinema gives you the stereoscopic image. A 4D cinema adds motion seats and basic environmental effects. A 5D cinema deepens both — more degrees of seat motion, and a fuller effect track.
The three layers of a 5D cinema
The image. In this manufacturer's line, the reference 5D format is the 5D flying cinema: a hemispherical or fully wrapped dome screen of 23–30 metres with 4K laser projection, so the image wraps 180–360 degrees of the audience's field of view rather than sitting in front of it.
The motion. Seat platforms with 6 degrees of freedom — lift, pitch, rotation and more — supporting 12 directions of movement and 72 combinations of actions such as falling and sharp turns, synchronised with the film. In the dome format the seat platform itself rotates through 180 degrees. Synchronisation accuracy is the spec that decides whether motion feels like flight: figures in this catalogue run from 0.1 seconds down to 10 milliseconds on the 5D flying theater.
The effects. The environmental track: wind adjustable from level 0 to 8, water mist from micron-level nozzles, vibration from 5 to 50 Hz, fragrance libraries, lightning simulation and leg-sweep effects triggered as the film passes. This is the layer that makes audiences duck.
What to specify when buying
- Screen format first — flat, curved or dome; projection or LED. It drives building size and media format. The dome screen guide compares the options.
- Motion envelope — degrees of freedom, tilt range and synchronisation accuracy, in writing.
- Effect list — name the effects you are paying for (wind levels, mist, vibration band, scent, leg sweep) rather than accepting the 5D label alone.
- Content — 5D films carry a motion and effects track; confirm who produces or licenses it. See what 4D cinema adds if you are deciding between formats.
The catalogue's seat-level range is the motion chair seat series, listed in eight variants. The listing publishes no room-size or venue positioning for the series, and it does not state whether the seats are supplied on their own or only as part of a complete cinema — ask about seat-only supply, the matching scope (screen, effects, content) and the venue conditions each variant needs.
