What is 4D cinema?
4D cinema = 3D film + moving seats + physical effects, all synchronised. It is the entry point of the motion cinema family — here is what it includes and where its limits are.
A 4D cinema shows a 3D film to an audience seated in motion chairs, with physical effects — air, water, vibration, scent — fired in sync with the action on screen. When a character dives, the seats pitch; when the scene crosses water, a fine mist reaches the front rows. The label is marketing shorthand, not physics: the fourth 'dimension' is the physical layer the audience feels.
What a 4D installation contains
- Motion seats — dynamic chairs or seat platforms that pitch, roll, heave and vibrate with the film. The seat range in this catalogue is the 3D 4D 5D 6D motion chair seat series, listed in eight variants.
- Effect units — wind, water spray, vibration, scent and leg effects, driven from an effects track authored with the film.
- Screen and sound — a 3D projection or LED screen sized to the room; in larger formats this grows into the wrapped screens of the flying dome theater line.
- Control system — the synchronisation layer that keeps seats, effects and film in step; at seat level this is where quality differences hide, so ask for the synchronisation accuracy figure.
4D or 5D — the real difference
In practice, 5D formats deepen the same stack: more degrees of seat motion (up to 6-DOF platforms with dozens of action combinations), a wider effects palette (lightning simulation, leg sweeping, larger vibration bands), and larger, more wrapped screens. Our 5D cinema guide details the reference specification. The buying rule: choose the format by the experience you are selling tickets for, then verify the equipment list layer by layer — never by label alone.
Who buys 4D
Shopping malls, science museums, family entertainment centres and cinema lobbies — venues that need a high-turnover attraction in an ordinary room. A 4D cinema needs no special building: it is the format that fits existing real estate, which is precisely why it outsells the spectacular formats it borrows its effects from.
