Dome screen guide

The screen is the largest single decision in a dome theater: projection or LED, 7 metres or 30. This guide compares the two technologies on brightness, seams, sound and upkeep.

Every dome theater in this line is one of two machines wearing the same shape: a projection dome, where projectors paint a passive spherical surface, or an LED dome, where the surface itself emits the image. Your venue, content and maintenance appetite decide which.

Projection domes

The projection formats reach the largest sizes here — ball screens of 15–30 metres in the 5D flying theater and flying dome cinema — using 4K laser projection with seamless multi-channel splicing, pixel densities of 120,000 points per square metre or more, and refresh rates to 120 Hz. Strengths: the biggest diameters and a mature film ecosystem. Costs: a darkened hall, projector throw geometry, lamp/laser maintenance, and seam calibration as a recurring discipline.

LED domes

The LED translucent dome theater covers 7–23.6 metres with self-illuminating panels: 4K/8K resolution, 3,840 Hz refresh, 10,000:1 contrast — bright in rooms that cannot go fully dark, with no throw distance to design around. Its sound-transparent structure puts the main speakers behind the picture ('sound emerging from the picture'), removing the speaker-placement compromise every projection dome makes. The compact flying cinema theater publishes a P1.8 LED dome of 39.25 sqm at 4,080 x 4,086 resolution for smaller halls. Costs: panel price per square metre and structural support for hanging or floor-standing frames.

Choosing in practice

  • Diameter above ~24 m, dedicated dark hall — projection is the proven route in this line.
  • Mixed-use or daylit venue, museums and malls — LED's brightness and sound transparency usually win.
  • Audio-critical venues — sound-transparent LED removes the screen-vs-speakers fight entirely.
  • Content pipeline — match the film format (resolution, frame rate) to the screen you buy; the LED vs projection comparison goes deeper on lifetime cost.
